Win caps a good week for Redfern
Victory in  Magna's Pro-Am Tournament at Romsey Golf Club capped a good week for Nick Redfern, which also saw him make it through to Final Qualifying for this year?s Open Championship.  Redfern, who plays out of the Legendary Golf Club in Hong Kong, shot a four-under-par round of 65 at Romsey, one shot ahead of Philip Bryden (Alresford) and Wraith Grant (Woodcote Park).  48 hours earlier he had finished third in the Regional Open Qualifier at Effingham and he went on to play in the Local Final Qualifying Tournament at Glasgow Gailes on Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th July.   Ninety-six competitors vyed for four places in the Open Championship at Turnberry.

Walhampton?s Kevin Saunders won the Pro-Am with his team of  Peter Price, Paul Baxter and John Hibberd.  Their nineteen-under-par score was two better than Jon Barnes, Mike Oliver, Reg Oliver and Gary Oliver.  Tim Cornick (Portsmouth Golf Centre) was third with Richard Hart, Paul Reynolds and John Farley-Cooper (124).

Chris Pugh was ?Nearest the Pin? at the tenth,

The Tournament, which was organised by Romsey Golf Club and the Rotary Club of Southampton Magna, was delayed by 50 minutes after heavy overnight rain flooded the Nursling course.  The event raised funds for the Piam Brown Ward at Southampton General Hospital. (see below)

The Piam Brown Ward of the Wessex Paediatric Oncology Centre of Southampton General Hospital.

The ward treats all types of childhood cancer in the age range of a day old to eighteen years. The unit has ten in-patient beds and a day ward area.  Leukaemia is the most common type of childhood cancer, accounting for approximately one-third of new patients each year.  On average the unit receives 60 to 80 new patients each year, whilst caring for approximately 100 to 150 patients on treatment at any one time.  The unit covers the whole of the Wessex region.

Monies raised can be spent on purchasing
much needed and more advanced medical equipment for the ward,
comfort amenities for parents ( who often spend long periods of time on the ward during treatment),
replacement and new toys and activities for the play-room,
a variety of items for the school,
the list is almost endless!  Outings also form an important part of the social side of the ward.
