Pro - Am 2008

The annual Pro - Am Golf Tournament was held at Romsey Golf Club on Friday 27 June 2008 and raised over £3,000 in aid of the Hampshire and IOW Air Ambulance and other Rotary Charities. The following report was issued after the event. The change of venue to Romsey Golf Club was a great success with 33 teams entering the event. Over £3000.00 was raised for the selected charity this year which was The Hampshire and IOW Air Ambulance.

Although the day started off in overcast rainy conditions the weather improved throughout the day and the course was in great condition and proved to require the ability to hit the ball straight to stay out of trouble – something that many players found challenging!

Wellow’s David Porter took the professionals' first prize with a three-under-par round of 66 continuing his run of recent successes.

Pro Am prize went to Romsey’s professional James Pitcher with his local team – club captain Kelvin Beale, Rod Barnes and John Lewis; their score was a sixteen-under-par 122 in a closely fought competition.  A very good prize table (including golf bags, shoes, sweaters, etc rewarded the top six teams shown below.

Other minor prizes went to Paul Torrible, Roy Smith, James Pinhorn & Mike Oliver.  The raffle was well-supported, with some great prizes too, and raised about £650.

Thanks, as always, go to the main sponsors of the event –  H A  Fox, JCB, HSBC and Hilco Appraisal Ltd as well as the many minor contributors.

The help of many Rotarians on day is greatly appreciated as well as Lynne Dadley from the charity and their emergency response vehicle, which managed a few hours with us before being called out.

The Porter family were well represented on the day, with David’s mother caddying for him and then winning the first prize in the raffle (a 5-day ferry return to France with Brittany Ferries) a good reward for a long day.

It has been agreed that next year’s event will be at Romsey Golf Club on 26th june in association with an individual fund-raiser (Stuart Grace) who will be doing a one day 70 mile cycle ride and 72 holes of golf finishing at Romsey for the final 9 holes.

We have decided to support same charity that he is fund-raising for, the Piam Brown children’s Oncology ward at Southampton General Hospital, which we believe is an excellent choice.  The combined funds raised should be significant with both parties working towards the same goal.
